How might we enable creative arts practice to increase the level of engagement among seniors?
Keswick Multi-Care is a first-class senior care center on the edge of Baltimore’s Roland Park community.
The change of aging can cause feelings of boredom, isolation, and depression. While nursing homes strive to provide age-appropriate activities, there might be those that the parents have previously engaged in or have not tried at all. Many aging parents have had a physical impairment and emotional trauma. Some of them had dyslexia, and many had Alzheimer's disease and dementia. Considering the parents' history and conditions, activities that were easy to comprehend with simple steps were conducted.
As the recipient of the Elizabeth ‘Libby’ Bowerman ‘82 Fellowship, I had the opportunity to positively impact the lives of Keswick’s residents and the surrounding community. During my tenure, I supported the elderly population to express their stories of hope and sorrow through workshops and creative art projects. I worked directly with Keswick’s Creative Arts Coordinator to plan and lead projects that promoted self-advocacy and empowerment and were meaningful for the participants.
I curated exhibitions for the artworks completed by the Keswick community:
Communal Exhibition inspired by Judy Chicago’s The Dinner Party at Rousse Gallery, Baltimore, MD, U.S.
Community Show at Meyerhoff Gallery, Baltimore, MD, U.S.
Community Show at Keswick Multi-Care Center, Baltimore, MD, U.S.
