About Traumastan: A Virtual Reality Storytelling Game for Survivors of Trauma

(emphasizes narrative and healing through immersive storytelling)

Thank you for your willingness to share your experience with us. This survey is part of a larger research and design project focused on developing an immersive Virtual Reality (VR) simulation that draws from real-life experiences of gender-based violence. The goal is to create a trauma-informed, interactive storytelling experience that fosters empathy, raises awareness, and supports healing.

Your responses—especially the narratives, symbols, emotional journeys, and challenges—will serve as creative inspiration for the characters, environments, and scenarios in the VR simulation. We are not replicating any single story, but rather weaving together themes from multiple voices to build a respectful, emotionally resonant, and fictionalized experience.

All data you share will remain confidential, and your privacy will be protected. The findings will be used solely for research, education, and design development purposes.

About the Researcher

My name is Hamida Khatri. I am a counselor-in-training at the University of North Texas (UNT), where I am pursuing a degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling, and I am also a Ph.D. candidate at the University of Texas at Dallas (UTD). This research is part of my doctoral work, which lies at the intersection of mental health, immersive technology, and storytelling.

With a background in art, trauma-informed care, and interactive media, my work focuses on how Virtual Reality (VR) can be used as a tool to support survivors of gender-based violence. I created Traumastan as a narrative-driven VR simulation to center survivor experiences, foster empathy, and provide space for emotional reflection and healing.

This project is grounded in the belief that lived experiences—especially those of survivors—can shape more compassionate mental health tools and immersive experiences. Your voice and participation are vital to building a VR game that is authentic, supportive, and rooted in real stories.
